Our program was founded in 2006 in memory of Jane Ferguson – a woman passionately committed to educating and inspiring young people with hands-on experiences in the out-of-doors.
Jane Ferguson Wilderness Adventures provides the kinds of opportunities for youth that instill the sense of joy and wonder Jane always discovered in the Wilderness.
Travis Burdick
Travis Burdick has a passion for introducing young people to the wonders of their wild backyards. A former Outward Bound Instructor and Director of UC Santa Cruz's Wilderness Orientation Program, Travis brings a lifetime of wilderness leadership to Jane Ferguson Wilderness Adventures. He is the elementary music teacher for Red Lodge Schools. Travis believes JFWA helps connect young people to the wilderness, to each other, and to themselves.
Meet our great Board of Directors that keeps this
amazing program alive!
Hailey is the mother of two young children and works as a school nurse for Carbon County. She believes that everyone does better when they spend time outside. Hailey has spent time working on the Smith River, and occasionally guiding Ferguson camps. Sometimes you will find her in the mountains, and sometimes just outside walking to the grocery store.

David Kallenbach had many wonderful opportunities to work with Jane Ferguson in the backcountry when the two of them worked together for Outward Bound many years ago. Her wonderment with Nature is the main reason David got involved with Jane Ferguson Wilderness Adventures and joined the Board ten years ago. David served as the Director of the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness Foundation (ABWF), a former Park Ranger, science teacher, and outdoor educator and was first introduced to this area as a former instructor for Outward Bound in Montana, a time in which he had the good fortune of introducing many people, young and old, to the beauty and better understanding of the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness!

As a personal friend of and fellow Outward Bound Instructor with Jane Ferguson, he really likes the JFWA mission of getting kids into the backcountry and sharing our skills and experiences with them. Grant’s favorite thing to do (a difficult choice ‘cuz he likes so many outdoor activities), is climbing a hill and skiing down it in a foot of fresh snow!

She continued as a Program Director with JFWA until 2013, when she took a position on the Board of Directors. As the owner of Honey’s Café in Red Lodge since 2012, Kerri continues to bring her environmental education skills together with her business skills - and her love of these outdoors - to the forward movement of JFWA. “My most cherished part of being involved in this program is waving the individual participants off at departure, and welcoming back a group! The difference is palpable!” .
